Back Pain Q & A
What causes back pain?
Back pain can have several causes. Acute back pain is often due to trauma from a fall or sports injury. You can also hurt your back making sudden or awkward movements, and back injuries are common in accidents at work or on the roads.
Another way of injuring your back is to attempt more than you’re physically able to do, which is a common problem for many people. Unsafe lifting techniques are also notorious for causing acute back injuries.
Chronic back pain develops more slowly. It could be due to a gradual deterioration of tissues or bones or a series of tiny traumas that build up over time, for instance, microfractures in a bone. As well as injuries like these, back pain can be due to disease.
What diseases could be causing my back pain?
Genetic diseases like scoliosis can cause back pain. Scoliosis makes your spine curve outward toward the sides of your body instead of going in a line down the middle of your back.
Degenerative diseases develop when something causes the tissues or bones to weaken or break down as you get older. Examples include:

Inflammatory diseases such as ankylosing spondylitis and rheumatoid arthritis can also cause back pain.
What is the treatment for back pain?
Treatment for your back pain depends on what the cause is and how severe the symptoms are. If you have an aching back muscle from a vigorous game over the weekend, a few days of taking it a bit easier, using over-the-counter pain medication and doing some gentle stretching should do the trick.
However, for anything more serious or long-lasting, you should visit an Interventional pain specialist like Dr. Nelson. Physical therapies, acupuncture, massage therapy, and chiropractic can be highly effective for many causes of back pain. Most patients’ treatment plans start with these noninvasive approaches, which in most cases will relieve the pain and restore function.
If the initial treatments you’re receiving for back pain aren’t working for you, Dr. Nelson has a comprehensive selection of cutting-edge, minimally invasive approaches that include:
