Congratulations to my patient Lois Newell
Congratulations to my patient Lois Newell for winning Gold at the USA National Pickleball Championships after being barely able to walk two weeks before the tournament.
Stan and Lois Newell are avid competitive pickle ball players. They came to me just over two weeks before the Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championships in Indian Wells, California on November 5-13.
Lois started having pain in her right knee in June. By the time I saw her, she could barely walk, let alone play and practice pickleball. We were able to get an MRI here at ProOrtho of her lumbar spine to rule out a sciatic nerve problem. An MRI of the knee showed some minor nonspecific arthritis.
Based on Lois’s clinical presentation, we did a popliteus tendon injection of the right knee. Popliteus tendonitis is a somewhat rare and often overlooked cause of knee pain. Within 24 hours, Lois was showing dramatic improvement and was able to get back on the pickleball court two days later.
Fast forward to Indian Wells. Lois plays lights out pickleball and ultimately ends up on the podium receiving a gold medal for her class.
